How a baseball family's legacy shaped Richie Palacios's professional journey
In short: Born on May 16, 1997, Richie Palacios carries more than just talent to the diamond. With a lineage of professional players spanning generations and multiple nations, his career is a complex tapestry of heritage, injury setbacks, and the relentless pursuit of Major League Baseball success.
Richie Palacios's baseball identity is deeply rooted in his family history. His father, Richard, reached the Triple-A level, while his uncle, Rey Palacios, played in Major League Baseball from 1988 to 1990. This legacy continues through Richie and his brother, Joshua Palacios, who is part of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. This multi-generational connection to the sport provides a unique backdrop to Richie's professional trajectory. His brother Joshua also competes in professional baseball. This family tradition is clearly evident in their shared athletic pursuits.
His career has been defined by significant resilience against physical setbacks. After being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2018 MLB draft, Palacios faced a torn labrum in 2019 and the 2020 season cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even during his successful 2022 rookie campaign with the Cleveland Guardians, where he made his debut on April 25, he faced various injuries, including a knee injury in 2024 and a fractured right ring finger in 2025. He also suffered a knee sprain in 2025. Such physical challenges have tested his determination throughout his career.
Palacios's heritage also offers a fascinating look at international baseball eligibility. Due to his Curaçaoan mother and Puerto Rican father, he is eligible to represent the Netherlands, Curaçao, Puerto Rico, and the United States. He has already represented the Dutch team, appearing in the 2023 World Baseball Classic during a match against Taiwan. Today, he plays for the Tampa Bay Rays, having moved through the Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis Cardinals organizations. He previously played for the Cleveland Guardians and the St. Louis Cardinals. Currently, he is a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.
