From a Puerto Rican fishing village to the top of the MLB draft
In short: Before he was a World Series champion and a first-overall draft pick, Carlos Correa was playing catch in an alleyway. His journey from a low-income family in Santa Isabel to baseball royalty is a story of resilience, overcoming natural disasters, and extraordinary natural talent.
Born in 1994 in Puerto Rico, Carlos Correa’s early years were marked by both athletic promise and significant hardship. Raised in the fishing village of Barrio Velázquez, his family faced frequent financial struggles and the devastation of Hurricane Georges in 1998, which heavily damaged their home. Despite these challenges, his father provided daily training, and his talent was evident by age seven, when he was pitching and hitting for local affiliates.
Correa's ascent through the baseball ranks was fueled by both individual skill and community support. As he moved toward higher-level competition in Caguas, his family often relied on the charity of others to fund travel. His development eventually led him to the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School on a scholarship. By 2012, his performance at national showcases was so dominant that he was projected as a top-ten talent by major outlets like ESPN.
On June 4, 2012, the Houston Astros selected him first overall, making him the highest-selected player directly from a Puerto Rican high school and the first Latin American-born player to be the number one pick in the MLB Draft. His professional career has been a whirlwind of records and controversy, including a 2017 World Series title that was later overshadowed by the revelation of the Astros' sign-stealing scandal, for which Correa issued a public apology.
Since his 2015 debut, where he won the American League Rookie of the Year, Correa has been a perennial All-Star. His career has seen him navigate trades, free agency, and injuries, including a move from the Minnesota Twins back to the Astros during the 2025 season.
