From Rose Bowl MVP to a $4.5 million legal settlement
In short: Rick Neuheisel’s career is a study in high-stakes volatility. He rose from a walk-on at UCLA to a Rose Bowl MVP, only to face a career-altering scandal involving gambling and secret interviews. His journey from the sidelines to the courtroom highlights the thin line between prestige and professional ruin.
Neuheisel's ascent began at UCLA, where he transitioned from a walk-on to a starting quarterback. In 1983, he led the Bruins to a Pac-10 championship and a Rose Bowl appearance. Despite suffering from food poisoning hours before the game, he started and led the team to a 45–9 victory over Illinois, earning MVP honors. During this era, he also set an NCAA record for single-game pass completion percentage, finishing with 92.6%.
His coaching career saw him lead the University of Colorado and the University of Washington. While at Washington, he achieved a milestone as the initial ex-Rose Bowl MVP to guide a victorious Rose Bowl squad, directing the Huskies to an 11–1 finish and a third-place national spot in 2000. However, his tenure was marred by allegations of overlooking severe disciplinary issues among players, including criminal behavior and domestic violence, during that same season.
The turning point came in 2003 when Neuheisel was fired from Washington following a gambling scandal and a secret interview for a job with the San Francisco 49ers. While the NCAA initially considered a two-year 'show-cause' order that would have effectively blacklisted him, the university gave him an ultimatum to resign. Neuheisel refused, leading to a legal battle. The lawsuit eventually revealed that the NCAA had failed to turn over crucial evidence, resulting in a $4.5 million settlement for Neuheisel.
