In short: Rick Tocchet is one of hockey's most enduring figures, but his path to the NHL bench was nearly derailed by a high-stakes criminal investigation. Discover how a career defined by grit and physical play survived a scandal that could have ended it forever.

Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Rick Tocchet established himself as a premier power forward known for his physicality. He became an NHL All-Star four times and holds the record for the most Gordie Howe hat tricks in NHL history with 18. His playing career was marked by significant milestones, including scoring 39 points during the 1984–85 season while helping the Philadelphia Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final.

However, Tocchet's legacy faced a severe test in 2006. He was served with a criminal complaint regarding 'Operation Slapshot,' an investigation into a nationwide sports gambling ring. The allegations suggested he helped finance wagering involving several NHL players. This led to a mandatory leave of absence from the league and a legal battle that eventually saw him plead guilty to conspiracy and promoting gambling in May 2007.

The consequences were significant: Tocchet was sentenced to two years of probation, which could have been five years in prison. The NHL imposed a de facto two-year suspension, citing aggravating factors like illicit contact with personnel and his participation in the World Series of Poker. He was not eligible to return to the league until February 2008, under strict conditions to abstain from all gambling.

Tocchet's comeback is one of the most resilient in modern sports. He transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant for several teams before becoming a head coach for the Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks. His perseverance culminated in winning the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year in 2024, proving that his career could transcend both his playing style and his legal hurdles.
