In short: In 2005, a 14-year-old boy became the youngest player to ever debut in the Spanish ACB. But when the NBA came calling, the world's most hyped prospect faced a dilemma: cross the Atlantic or stay home.

Ricard Rubio Vives, known as Ricky Rubio, entered the professional basketball scene with unprecedented velocity. At just 14 years and 11 months old, he debuted in the Spanish ACB league for DKV Joventud, eventually becoming the youngest player in the league's history. His talent was so immense that he was shielded from the press, with his parents and club agreeing to no interviews until his 18th birthday in 2008.

The tension peaked during the 2009 NBA Draft. The Minnesota Timberwolves used the fifth overall pick to select Rubio, who became the earliest drafted player born during the 1990s. However, a complex web of contract buyouts and league regulations stalled his American debut. While the Timberwolves had an agreement in principle to buy out his Joventut contract, the NBA's collective bargaining agreement prohibited teams from paying more than $500,000 toward a buyout. This financial hurdle, combined with intense pressure from Spanish media and his community, led Rubio to delay his move to the United States.

Rubio finally joined the Timberwolves in 2011, but his career would be defined by both brilliance and physical struggle. He achieved remarkable feats, such as recording 17 assists in a single game multiple times and leading the ACB in steals. Yet, his path was frequently interrupted by severe injuries, including ACL tears in both 2012 and 2021. After a decade of navigating the highest levels of global basketball, Rubio announced a hiatus in 2023 to prioritize his mental health, later announcing his retirement from the NBA in early 2024.
