The resilient rise of an undrafted football standout
In short: After overcoming a broken leg in college and multiple professional injuries, Rico Dowdle transformed from an undrafted free agent into a prolific NFL starter. His remarkable journey through the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers demonstrates how a player can overcome significant physical setbacks to secure a massive multi-million dollar contract.
Rico Dowdle’s journey began with record-breaking high school performances in North Carolina, where he transitioned from running back to quarterback to lead A. C. Reynolds High School to an 1el-2 record. His senior season was particularly dominant, as he set a WNC single-season record with 63 total touchdowns, earning Parade All-American honors before committing to the University of South Carolina.
His collegiate and early professional years were defined by significant physical setbacks. At South Carolina, Dowdle navigated a sports hernia as a freshman, a broken leg during his sophomore season, and a left ankle injury during his junior year. These challenges followed him into the NFL; after signing with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in April 2020, he faced hip and ankle injuries that frequently landed him on injured reserve.
Despite these hurdles, Dowdle eventually found a breakthrough. Following the departure of Tony Pollard, he emerged as a vital component of the Cowboys' offense, notably becoming the first undrafted free agent in franchise history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. His ability to perform under pressure continued with the Carolina Panthers, where he recorded a career-high 206 rushing yards in a 2025 comeback victory against the Miami Dolphins.
Dowdle's tenacity led to a substantial $12.25 million, two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers by 2026, completing a journey from practice squad hopeful to major signing.
