From overlooked high school prospect to NBA executive and elite sports agent
In short: Before managing the Los Angeles Lakers, Rob Pelinka was a high school player dismissed by scouts. He overcame doubts about his height and ability to become a Michigan legend and a world-class agent, eventually managing over $500 million in professional basketball contracts.
Rob Pelinka's ascent was far from certain. During his senior year at Lake Forest High School, scouts like David Kaplan questioned his height and dribbling skills, doubting he could play for major Division I programs. His path changed during the 1987 Elgin tournament, where he scored 139 points and was named MVP, proving he could compete at a high level. This performance shifted interest from mid-major schools like William & Mary to major programs like Michigan and North Carolina.
At the University of Michigan, Pelinka achieved a rare distinction. He is the only player in school history to participate in three NCAA Final Four appearances: the 1989 championship-winning team and the 1992 and 1993 national championship runner-up teams. During his tenure, he played alongside the legendary 'Fab Five' and was noted for a grade point average that rivaled his scoring average on the court.
Transitioning from the court to the boardroom, Pelinka built a prolific career as a sports agent. He represented high-profile talent, including Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, and managed players selected as top-14 picks in various NBA drafts. Forbes acknowledged his professional achievements by ranking him among the world's top 10 sports agents, following his oversight of player contracts exceeding $500 million. Today, he serves as the president of basketball operations and general manager for the Los Angeles Lakers, working alongside Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
