From Manchester United academy prospect to a £13 million Premier League record signing
In short: Few players navigate the volatile highs and lows of professional football like Robbie Brady. After a single appearance for Manchester United, the Irish winger embarked on a journey through the English leagues, eventually commanding record-breaking transfer fees and becoming a clinical hero for the Republic of Ireland.
Robbie Brady’s professional trajectory is defined by significant transitions. After being scouted from St. Kevin's Boys and joining the Manchester United academy in 2008, he made his first-team appearance as an 86th-minute substitute against Newcastle United in September 2012. While his time at United was brief, it set the stage for a career of high-stakes movement between clubs like Hull City, Norwich City, and Burnley.
His transfer history reflects the financial scale of the Premier League. In July 2015, he moved to Norwich City for a reported £7 million, a period that saw him experience the sting of relegation. By January 2017, he achieved a personal milestone by joining Burnley in a deal worth approximately £13 million, which stood as a club record at the time. His career has since seen him represent clubs including Bournemouth and Preston North End.
On the international stage, Brady established himself as a vital figure for the Republic of Ireland. He holds the record for the most goals scored for the Irish under-21 side, with seven goals. His senior international career is highlighted by a spectacular debut against Oman in 2012, where he scored and provided two assists, and his pivotal role in Euro 2016, where he scored against both Italy and France.
Despite the physical tolls of the game—including two groin operations and a 2016 incident where he lost two teeth during a match against Chelsea—Brady has remained a decorated figure within the Football Association of Ireland, earning multiple Player of the Year honors across various international levels.
