The 'College Jokić' who traded jerseys for a Lakers contract
In short: Before he became a professional athlete, Robbie Avila was a high school phenom whose name became the ultimate meme. Known for his protective goggles and unique playstyle, he navigated a complex journey from Illinois stardom to the NBA, proving that internet notoriety can sometimes pave the way for real-world success.
Robbie Avila’s rise in American basketball began at Oak Forest High School in Illinois. As a senior, he became the school's all-time leading scorer, averaging 23.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. According to 247Sports, his superiority placed him among Illinois' top six athletes and ranked him as the nation's 54th power forward. These accolades led to a recruitment battle involving schools like Loyola Chicago and Richmond, eventually landing him at Indiana State University.
At Indiana State, Avila’s career was defined by both statistical growth and high-profile movement. After a freshman year where he earned MVC All-Freshman Team honors, he helped lead the Sycamores to a 32–7 record and an NIT final appearance in his sophomore season. However, his tenure was marked by a significant move: on April 20, 2024, he entered the transfer portal and chose to follow former head coach Josh Schertz to Saint Louis University.
Beyond the box scores, Avila became a cultural phenomenon due to his appearance—specifically his use of protective goggles. This led to an explosion of nicknames from fans and teammates, ranging from 'Cream Abdul-Jabbar' to 'Nikola Yogurt.' Despite the meme status, he maintained a high level of production, including a career-high 35 points in February 2024. Following a missed selection in the NBA draft, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers via an Exhibit 10 deal on 25 June 2026.
