In short: Robert Gallery was once the highest-rated offensive lineman prospect in the country. After a decade of professional football, he faced a devastating reality: extensive brain damage from repeated head trauma. Now, he is transforming his personal struggle into a mission to revolutionize athlete mental health care.

Born in Manchester, Iowa, on July 26, 1980, Robert Gallery rose to prominence as a dominant force for the University of Iowa. A unanimous All-American and winner of the 2003 Outland Trophy, he entered the NFL with immense expectations, selected second overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2004 draft. His prospect rating was a perfect 9.0, the highest ever recorded for an offensive lineman. During his college years, he was a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection. He also earned the distinction of being an Eagle Scout.

His professional career included eight seasons in the NFL, playing for the Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks. While he found success at left guard, he struggled at the left tackle position for which he was originally drafted. By the time he retired in 2012, the physical toll of the game became clear. 3D brain scans revealed extensive damage from accumulated concussions, leading to severe anxiety, depression, memory loss, and tinnitus. His tenure in the league also included a stint with the New England Patriots. He was previously honoured with the Ed Block Courage Award by his teammates.

Seeking relief where conventional medicine failed, Gallery turned to ibogaine—a psychoactive compound from the West African iboga plant—in Mexico in 2021. This experience, which dramatically alleviated his symptoms, inspired him to co-found Athletes for Care. As president of the nonprofit, Gallery now advocates for traumatic brain injury research and increased accessibility to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for athletes facing similar mental health challenges. He has since become a public speaker at major conferences, such as Psychedelic Science 2025. His nonprofit work focuses on connecting retired players with essential wellness resources.
