The man who turned clutch shooting into a championship art form
In short: Most players chase individual glory, but Robert Horry chased rings. Over a 16-year NBA career, he became the ultimate specialist, securing seven championships with three different franchises by mastering the high-pressure shot when the game was on the line.
Nicknamed "Big Shot Rob," Horry’s career was defined by his ability to perform in the highest-stakes moments. His reputation was forged in the 1995 playoffs, where he hit a game-winning jumper for the Houston Rockets against the San Antonio Spurs, followed by a critical three-pointer to help clinch the 1995 NBA Finals against the Orlando Magic. This specific victory remains his proudest, as the Rockets entered the postseason as a sixth seed.
His knack for precision was statistically remarkable. In 1997, while playing for the Phoenix Suns, he set a playoff record by hitting seven consecutive three-point shots without a miss. He later demonstrated this efficiency in the 2005 NBA Finals, where he scored 21 of the San Antonio Spurs' points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a game-winning shot with 5.9 seconds remaining to secure a 96–95 victory.
Beyond his shooting, Horry was a rare statistical anomaly. He was the first player to record at least 100 steals, 100 blocks, and 100 three-pointers in a single season. His longevity and success are reflected in his championship pedigree: he is one of only four players to win titles with three different teams—the Rockets (two), the Lakers (three), and the Spurs (two). He remains the only player from the 1950s or 1960s Celtics era to win more than six titles.
Even in retirement, his impact is felt in the record books. When he finished his career, he held the NBA Finals record for total three-pointers made with 56, surpassing Michael Jordan's mark of 42.
