The Texas city named after a geological mystery that fooled early settlers
In short: When Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1851, they discovered massive, rectangular rock walls buried underground. They assumed they were man-made, sparking decades of speculation about a prehistoric civilization. Today, we know the truth is far more ancient, though the city still carries the name of this natural, jointed sandstone formation.
The city of Rockwall, Texas, owes its name to a geological curiosity encountered by the first Anglo-American settlers in 1851. While digging wells, these pioneers unearthed large, straight-lined rock structures that appeared to be the work of human hands. The formations, which form a near-perfect rectangle, led to widespread theories that an ancient, unknown race had constructed them. Even as late as 1925, figures like Byron Khun de Prorok publicly argued for the artificial origins of the wall, a claim that has since been thoroughly dismissed by modern science.
Geologists and archaeologists eventually determined that the walls are actually natural sandstone dikes that intruded into Cretaceous marl. These formations are jointed, creating the illusion of masonry. While the straight lines and sharp angles are unusual for a natural formation, they are not the result of human engineering. Despite the scientific consensus, the name remains, serving as a permanent reminder of the settlers' initial awe and the region's long history of human occupation.
The area’s human history stretches back much further than the 1851 settlement. Archaeological evidence, including Clovis points and artifacts associated with extinct Pleistocene mammals, confirms that prehistoric cultures inhabited the region between 13,500 and 13,000 years ago. Later, the land was occupied by Caddo Indians, followed by Creek Indians in the early 19th century. Today, Rockwall is a growing city of over 52,000 people, serving as the county seat and a hub on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard.
