The journeyman's path from Mississippi high school star to NBA veteran
In short: Before he was a fixture in the NBA, Rodney Hood was a high school phenom in Mississippi. His career would eventually span multiple franchises, legendary college programs, and even a surprising, long-unnoticed connection to a rock star neighbor.
Rodney Hood's ascent began at Meridian High School, where his senior season in 2010–11 saw him average nearly 25 points and 8.6 rebounds, leading the Wildcats to a Class 6A championship. By 2011, he was recognized as a top-tier national recruit, ranked as the number 5 small forward in the country. After a standout freshman year at Mississippi State, where he earned SEC All-Freshman honors, he transferred to Duke University in 2012.
At Duke, he became a team captain and earned second-team All-ACC honors during the 2013–14 campaign. His professional journey, which began with his selection as the 23rd overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 2014 NBA Draft, was characterized by frequent movement across the league.
Between 2014 and 2022, Hood played for several franchises, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Los Angeles Clippers. His tenure in Cleveland included a trip to the 2018 NBA Finals, though he famously expressed frustration over playing time during a game against the Raptors that same year. Beyond the court, Hood's life featured unexpected trivia, such as the fact that he lived next door to Paramore singer Hayley Williams without realizing it until 2021. After a career that included representing Team USA in FIBA World Cup qualifications, Hood officially announced his retirement from professional basketball on November 21, 2024.
