The wide receiver who broke records and faced a $10,000 fine
In short: Roddy White didn't just break Atlanta Falcons records; he navigated the complex intersection of elite athleticism and public controversy. From his wrestling roots to becoming an NFL receiving leader, his career offers a masterclass in how individual performance can collide with high-stakes team dynamics.
Before entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick in 2005, Roddy White was already a versatile standout. A four-sport letterman at James Island High School, he excelled in football, baseball, soccer, and wrestling. In the wrestling ring, he became known for a specific move he coined the "Shanaz," eventually becoming a two-time South Carolina state champion.
White's collegiate career at UAB was defined by steady progression. He began as a freshman recording 236 yards before exploding into an NCAA-leading senior season in 2004, where he caught 71 passes for 1,452 yards and 14 touchdowns. This production earned him a spot in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, where he was selected 27th overall by the Atlanta Falcons.
His professional journey was marked by both historic milestones and friction. In 2007, he became the first Falcon wide receiver since 1999 to reach 1,000 single-season receiving yards. However, his career also included a notable moment of controversy: in 2006, White wore a "Free Mike Vick" T-shirt and pulled up his jersey after scoring a touchdown while Vick was being sentenced for dogfighting charges. The league responded by fining him $10,000.
White reached the pinnacle of individual production in 2010, leading the NFL with 115 receptions and earning First Team All-Pro honors. Despite these accolades, his career remained a study in consistency versus volatility; while he set franchise records for single-game receiving yards (210 yards against the 49ers), he also faced seasons of spotty production and high-pressure contract holdouts.
