The dual-code athlete who conquered two different sports
In short: Most athletes specialize to master their craft. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck chose a different path, becoming a rare dual-code international. From winning a premiership in rugby league to debuting for the All Blacks in rugby union, his career is a masterclass in versatility and elite-level adaptation.
Born in Apia, Samoa, Tuivasa-Sheck began his journey at Otahuhu College in Auckland, where he uniquely played both rugby union and rugby league. This dual-sport foundation allowed him to navigate the distinct demands of both codes. He signed with the Sydney Roosters in 2011, quickly rising to become a standout talent. By 2013, he had secured a premiership with the Roosters and was named the Dally M Winger of the Year, establishing himself as a superstar in the NRL.
His career is defined by high-level leadership and accolades. In 2015, he transitioned to the fullback position for the New Zealand Warriors, where he eventually became the first club player to win the Dally M Medal in 2018. His international reach is equally expansive; he has represented both the New Zealand Kiwis and the All Blacks. In 2015, he played a pivotal role in the Kiwis' historic 2015 Anzac Test victory over Australia, one of only two such wins in the competition's history since 1997.
In a rare move for a modern superstar, Tuivasa-Sheck pivoted to rugby union in 2022, signing with the Auckland Blues to pursue the All Blacks jersey. He debuted for the national team in July 2022 before returning to rugby league with the Warriors in 2024. His career has been marked by significant physical challenges, including multiple season-ending ACL injuries in 2016 and 2026, yet he continues to be a prominent figure in the sport, recently signing with Wakefield Trinity for a 2027 debut.
Beyond the pitch, his character has been noted in moments of crisis. In 2015, he was the first on the scene of a car crash in Botany, rescuing a man and staying with the victims until help arrived. While his career has seen personal hurdles, including a 2023 drink-driving conviction, his ability to adapt across different codes and countries remains a unique feat in professional sports.
