The bear cub who broke Portuguese transfer records
In short: Rodrigo Zalazar's journey from an unregistered youth player to a multi-million euro star is a masterclass in persistence. After being left without a registration spot at his first club, he fought through the lower tiers of German football to become one of the most expensive transfers in Portuguese history.
Born in Albacete, Spain, to Uruguayan parents, Rodrigo Zalazar was raised in a deep footballing lineage. The son of former international José Zalazar (nicknamed El Oso), Rodrigo inherited the moniker El Osito, or 'The Bear Cub.' While his older brother chose to represent Spain, Rodrigo committed to his father's roots, choosing to play for Uruguay. This dual heritage allowed him to develop in the Spanish youth system before embarking on a nomadic professional path.
Zalazar’s early career was defined by bureaucratic hurdles and 'lost' seasons. After joining Málaga CF in 2014, he spent the 2018 season entirely unregistered because the club lacked free registration spots. He famously refused a loan to a lower-tier side during this period, choosing instead to wait for his breakthrough. This patience eventually led him to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 and a series of loans where he honed his craft in the German second division with FC St. Pauli and Schalke 04.
His 'breakout' moment arrived at Schalke 04, where he became a regular starter and scored the decisive goal to secure promotion to the Bundesliga as champions. Following a move to Braga for €6m in 2023, his value skyrocketed. In May 2026, Sporting CP signed him for €30 million with an €80 million release clause—the most expensive transfer ever between two Portuguese clubs. By late 2026, he had established himself as a premier talent, winning multiple Midfielder of the Month awards and earning a spot in Uruguay's 2026 World Cup squad.
