From Sydney junior leagues to becoming a record-breaking rugby league icon
In short: Few players command the wing with such clinical precision. Since his debut, Daniel Tupou has transformed from a promising talent into the Sydney Roosters' all-time leading try scorer, navigating a career defined by international dominance for both Australia and Tonga.
Born in Sydney on 17 June 1991, Daniel Tupou’s ascent through the ranks of rugby league began in the junior systems of the Berala Bears and Guildford Owls. His professional trajectory took a significant step forward when he joined the Parramatta Eels' NYC team, where he recorded 9 tries in 22 games during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. However, it was his move to the Sydney Roosters that would define his legacy.
Tupou’s impact was immediate. In his debut NRL season, he scored three tries across just three matches, including a standout performance at the SFS against the Wests Tigers. His ability to perform on the game's biggest stages was cemented early; in the 2013 NRL Grand Final, he famously leapt over Manly's David Williams to level the score, helping the Roosters secure a 26–18 victory.
This period marked the beginning of a prolific era, as he became a mainstay in championship-winning sides, collecting premiership titles in 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2026. His international career is marked by a unique dual allegiance. While he represented the Australian Kangaroos in the 2014 Four Nations, Tupou made a pivotal decision in 2017 to represent his ancestral heritage, Tonga. He played a vital role in Tonga's historic run to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup semi-finals. Beyond club and country, his individual milestones are immense; he became the fourth player in Roosters history to reach 100 tries and eventually surpassed all previous records to become the club's all-time leading try scorer during the 2023 season.
