How a Las Vegas rock band navigated years of lineup shifts and personal turmoil
In short: Formed in 2008 by vocalist Ronnie Radke, Falling in Reverse has survived constant member turnover and legal challenges. From its origins in a prison cell to achieving gold-certified success, the group has maintained a volatile, evolving sound while consistently making headlines for its internal drama and public feuds.
The band emerged from the aftermath of Ronnie Radke’s departure from Escape the Fate. Following his 2008 incarceration for violating probation—linked to a 2006 altercation in Las Vegas—Radke began writing music while behind bars. He initially formed a project called From Behind These Walls, which was later rebranded as Falling in Reverse due to copyright issues. By the time he was released in December 2010, he had already established a foundation for the group’s debut studio effort.
The group's first record, released in July 2011, reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified gold in 2019. Radke described the project as a collection of songs written during his imprisonment, focusing on themes of betrayal and personal struggle. Throughout the following decade, the band experienced a revolving door of musicians. Notable departures included bassist Mika Horiuchi in 2012, guitarist Jacky Vincent in 2015, and drummer Ryan Seaman in 2017. The band also suffered a significant loss in 2020 when rhythm guitarist Derek Jones passed away from a subdural hematoma.
Despite these disruptions, the band continued to release music, including albums like Fashionably Late in 2013, Just Like You in 2015, and Coming Home in 2017. Their creative direction has shifted frequently, moving from metal-heavy compositions to more experimental, vibey tracks. Radke has often used the band’s platform to address past conflicts, including a public rivalry with his former bandmates in Escape the Fate, which culminated in the 2013 Bury the Hatchet tour. By 2024, the group released its fifth studio album, Popular Monster, continuing a career defined by resilience and constant reinvention.
The band's history is marked by a tension between its commercial success and the instability of its personnel. Radke remains the sole original member, steering the group through various tours and stylistic changes. Whether through acoustic re-imaginings of their early work or high-profile festival appearances, the band has remained a fixture in the rock scene, consistently adapting to the loss of key members and the evolving expectations of their fanbase.
