The meteoric rise and controversial fall of a baseball superstar
In short: One of baseball's most commanding debut campaigns occurred in 2007, led by Ryan Braun. But as the home runs and MVPs piled up, so did the scrutiny. How does a player go from a record-breaking prodigy to a central figure in a major league drug scandal?
Ryan Braun’s entry into Major League Baseball was nothing short of historic. After a stellar collegiate career at the University of Miami, the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him fifth overall in 2005. By 2007, he had become a sensation, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award. His debut season was marked by unprecedented speed; he became the fastest Brewer to reach 10, 15, and 20 home runs, matching the early pace of legends like Albert Pujols and Mark McGwire.
The accolades continued to mount throughout his career. Braun secured five Silver Slugger awards between 2008 and 2012 and reached the pinnacle of individual success by winning the National League MVP award in 2011. He was a perennial All-Star, earning six selections. His physical prowess as a 'five-tool player'—combining power, average, speed, fielding, and arm strength—made him one of the most feared hitters in the league, even ranking seventh on the Sporting News' 2012 list of the 50 best players.
However, Braun's legacy is inextricably linked to the Biogenesis scandal. Following a failed testosterone test in 2011, Braun faced intense scrutiny regarding his ties to the Biogenesis of America clinic, which provided performance-enhancing drugs to players. On July 22, 2013, the league suspended him for 65 regular-season games. While Braun initially challenged the 2011 test by alleging procedural mishandling and antisemitism by the tester, he eventually admitted to using PEDs during his 2011 MVP season, casting a shadow over his most decorated year.
