In short: In 2014, Saint Lucia came within a single penalty kick of the FIFA World Cup. After a grueling two-legged tie against Aruba, they survived a shootout to reach the main draw, only to face a brutal reality in the next round. It remains a defining moment of 'what if' in Caribbean football.

The Saint Lucia national football team, known to FIFA as St Lucia, has navigated the competitive landscape of CONCACAF since 1986. While the nation has yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup or the CONCACAF Gold Cup, their journey is marked by high-stakes drama. Their first real attempt at the world stage occurred during the 1994 World Cup qualification cycle, where they were unfortunately eliminated in the opening round by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 1992. The most dramatic chapter in their history unfolded during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification. After a 4–2 loss in the first leg against Aruba, Saint Lucia secured a 4–2 victory in the return leg. The match pushed into extra time and ultimately a penalty shootout, which Saint Lucia won 5–4.

This victory propelled them into the second qualifying round, where they were placed in a difficult Group D alongside Canada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Puerto Rico. Despite the initial triumph, the team finished last in the group with just one point from six matches. To bolster their development, the Saint Lucia Football Association established a strategic partnership in 2012 with England's Carlisle United. This agreement allows four Saint Lucians to trial at the club annually in exchange for the club receiving the right of first refusal on their professional rights. This move highlights the island's effort to bridge the gap between regional play and professional European opportunities.
