From a piano-hating child to a heavy metal pioneer
In short: Saki's journey to the forefront of Japanese heavy metal wasn't a straight line. It involved a childhood of forced piano lessons, a fascination with Western wrestling, and a pivotal moment of inspiration from a 2005 TV reunion that transformed a student into a primary composer for one of the genre's most prominent all-female bands.
Born in the suburbs of Tokyo in 1990, Saki's musical path began with a sense of resistance. While she spent four to five years studying piano in elementary school, she grew to dislike the instrument due to strict teaching styles. Her true musical awakening occurred in junior high school, where she switched to classical guitar. It was here that she began exploring Western rock and pop, influenced by artists like The Beatles and Southern All Stars, as well as the heavy metal scenes highlighted in Young Guitar Magazine.
Her transition into professional metal was fueled by specific cultural touchstones. She cited the 2005 reunion of the band Seikima-II on NHK as a primary inspiration, specifically desiring to emulate guitarist Jail O'Hashi. This interest was bolstered by her brother's love of professional wrestling, which introduced her to the music of Motörhead, Metallica, and Marilyn Manson. By the time she reached high school, she was refining her skills through Yamaha Corporation classes and practicing with instructional DVDs from established guitarists.
Saki's career is marked by a series of high-profile collaborations and leadership roles. After a brief stint in the pioneering all-female band Destrose, she joined Mixx in 2010, where she wrote her first commercial song in under five days to secure a television tie-up. She later became a core member of Mary's Blood in 2012, serving as the band's main composer. Despite facing mental exhaustion and creative friction within the group, she eventually took on a leadership role in the band Nemophila in 2019, navigating the pressures of being the most experienced member in a new musical dynamic.
Today, Saki remains a versatile figure in the scene, balancing solo work, her duo Amahiru, and her role in Like-an-Angel. Her influence extends beyond her own performances; she organized the World Guitar Girls Collection project to showcase female rock guitarists, cementing her status as a curator and pioneer for the next generation of musicians.
