From non-league loans to MLS stardom: the ascent of Sam Surridge
In short: Few players navigate the grueling hierarchy of professional football quite like Sam Surridge. After climbing the ladder through English academy systems and various loan spells, the striker has transformed from a promising talent into a prolific Designated Player in Major League Soccer.
Sam Surgend's career is a study in the 'climbing the ladder' philosophy. After joining the AFC Bournemouth academy at 14, he spent years honing his craft through a series of strategic loans. His early successes included a productive period with Poole Town in the National League South during the 2016–17 season, followed by impactful spells at Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic. At Oldham, his rapid rise was evident when he earned the League Two Player of the Month award in September 2018 after scoring five goals in just four matches.
The transition to the highest levels of English football brought both triumphs and technical frustrations. Surridge made his Premier League debut for Bournemouth against Arsenal in February 2019 and was named the club's Under-21 Player of the Year for the 2018–19 season. His period with Stoke City proved more unstable, despite his achievements at Nottingham Forest, where he played a key role in their 2021–22 play-off victory and subsequent Premier League ascent. After a winning goal on his debut, he struggled to settle, leading to his departure only six months after joining in early 2022.
A major shift occurred on 25 July 2023, when Surridge moved to Nashville SC in Major League Soccer as a Designated Player for a reported $6.5 million. In the United States, he has become a cornerstone of the Nashville attack. His scoring feats include a hat-trick against CF Montréal in May 2024 and a four-goal performance against Chicago Fire in April 2025. Most notably, he played a pivotal role in Nashville's U.S. Open Cup victory, scoring the winning penalty in the final after a hat-trick in the semi-final against Philadelphia Union.
