In short: Before becoming a recognizable face in Hindi and South Indian films, Sameera Reddy described herself as a plump teenager with low glamour. Her journey from a music video appearance in 1997 to becoming a multi-language actress is a testament to the shifting tides of stardom.

Born on 14 December 1978 in Bombay to a Telugu father and a Mangalorean Konkani mother, Reddy's path to stardom was not immediate. She first appeared in a 1997 music video for Pankaj Udhas's 'Aur Aahista' before making her official film debut in the 2002 Hindi production Maine Dil Tujhko Diya. While that debut was a box office failure and met with mixed critical reviews regarding her diction and expression, it set the stage for a prolific career across several languages. She attended the Bombay Scottish School and later graduated from Sydenham College. Her sisters, Meghna and Sushama, have also worked within the media and film industries.

Reddy's career is marked by significant versatility and regional success. She gained recognition in South India through films like the 2008 Tamil hit Vaaranam Aayiram, where she played a college topper. Her filmography spans diverse genres, from the commercial success of Taxi No. 9211 to the surprise hit Nadunisi Naaygal, which critic Gautaman Bhaskaran hailed as her career-best performance. She has also appeared in major Hindi productions like Race and De Dana Dan. Her role in the 2008 film Race helped it become one of the highest-grossing Hindi movies of that year. She also earned acclaim for her performance in the 2012 film Vettai.

Beyond the screen, Reddy has achieved unique milestones, such as becoming the first Indian actress to feature in her own video game, 'Sameera: The Street Fighter'. After finding success in the 2013 Kannada film Varadhanayaka, she took a hiatus from acting, eventually returning to the screen in the 2024 film Naam. Her life off-camera includes marriage to entrepreneur Akshai Varde in 2014 and a family with a son and a daughter. Reddy once met Oprah Winfrey and presented her with a saree. Additionally, she served as a judge for the Miss Sri Lanka Online contest in 2012.
