In short: In the 1960s, San Diego State faced a recruiting crisis. Unable to compete with giants like USC for linemen, head coach Don Coryell turned to an unconventional tactic: recruiting junior college players and throwing the ball relentlessly. This high-octane passing game didn't just win games; it changed the sport's landscape.

The evolution of the Aztecs' identity began with a merger in 1921 between San Diego Normal School and San Diego Junior College. Originally, the teams were known by nicknames like 'Staters' or 'professors' before students selected the 'Aztecs' identity in 1925 to reflect a southwest image. The school's colors also underwent a dramatic shift; after students rejected purple and gold in 1928 due to color-fastness issues and rivalry with Whittier College, they voted for scarlet and black.

The program's most influential era arrived under Don Coryell, who coached for 12 seasons starting in 1961. Facing limitations in recruiting heavy linemen against major programs, Coryell embraced a passing offense to maximize the talent available in Southern California. This strategic pivot led to three undefeated seasons in 1966, 1968, and 1969, and helped develop NFL legends like John Madden, who served as his defensive assistant, and future MVP Brian Sipe.

The program's talent pipeline was further cemented by stars like Marshall Faulk. A versatile athlete, Faulk set an NCAA freshman record in 1991 by rushing for 386 yards and seven touchdowns in a single game against the University of the Pacific. He finished his collegiate career with 5,562 all-purpose yards, ranking 8th in NCAA history, and eventually became the second overall selection in the 1994 NFL draft.

Today, the Aztecs compete in the Pac-12 Conference and play at Snapdragon Stadium. The program has secured 21 conference championships, including a shared Mountain West title in 2012 and an outright championship in 2015 under coach Rocky Long.
