In short: The San Jose State Spartans have survived more than just fierce rivalries. During World War II, the team was stranded in Hawaii following the Pearl Harbor attack, serving as guards and improving island defenses. From those uncertain days to modern-day conference battles, the program's journey is defined by unexpected turns.

The Spartans' football history began in 1892, though their first official regular season was in 1898. The program has experienced significant eras of dominance, most notably during the 1930s and 1940s. During this powerhouse period, the team achieved 12 consecutive winning seasons and secured eight conference championships over an 18-year span. The program's only undefeated seasons occurred in 1932, with a 7–0–2 record, and 1939, when they went 13–0 and earned their first national ranking at No. 19.

The program has also faced significant adversity and institutional shifts. In 2004, rising costs and state budget cuts led faculty to advocate for dropping the football program entirely. Later, between 2007 and 2009, the team faced heavy NCAA sanctions for failing to meet Academic Progress Rate standards, resulting in the loss of 57 scholarships. Despite these hurdles, the Spartans have remained a consistent producer of talent, having sent 139 players to the NFL and produced over 90 All-America team members.

The team's legacy is also tied to legendary figures. Both Bill Walsh and Dick Vermeil, members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, were former Spartans players. More recently, the program has seen various coaching tenures, from the 2005 arrival of Dick Tomey to the current era under Ken Niumatalolo, who took over in January 2024. The team's home, CEFCU Stadium, was originally built in 1933 as Spartan Stadium with an initial capacity of 18,000.
