The 'oldest newcomer' who redefined a cinematic career
In short: In 1995, the Indian press labeled Sanjay Kapoor the industry's 'oldest newcomer.' After a debut film that had been stuck in production for six years, he faced a box office failure. Yet, he managed to pivot from a struggling lead to a respected character actor and producer.
Sanjay Kapoor’s entry into Hindi cinema was anything but seamless. Although his debut film, Prem, was released in 1995, the project had actually been in production since 1989. By the time it reached audiences, Kapoor was 30 years old, prompting critics to dismissively label him the industry's 'oldest newcomer.' The film itself failed to find an audience at the box office.
Despite this rocky start, Kapoor found immediate success later that same year with the film Raja, starring alongside Madhuri Dixit. While he enjoyed a period as a leading man in films like Sirf Tum (1999) and Auzaar (1997), his trajectory as a protagonist was inconsistent, marked by several box office failures. He eventually found critical acclaim by embracing different roles, such as playing a psychotic husband in the 2002 film Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe.
In recent years, Kapoor has successfully transitioned into television and digital streaming. His roles in the web series The Fame Game (2022) and The Gone Game (2020–2022), alongside the TV show Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara (2017–2018), garnered him acclaim. Beyond acting, he has expanded his influence in the industry as a producer through Sanjay Kapoor Entertainment Private Limited, notably producing Tevar in 2015.
Born in Mumbai in 1965 into a prominent Punjabi Hindu family, Kapoor is part of a significant cinematic lineage. He is the brother of actor Anil Kapoor and producer Boney Kapoor, and his extended family includes several notable actors, such as his nieces and nephews Sonam, Arjun, and Janhvi Kapoor.
