How a computer engineer revived a forgotten genre of Tamil street music
In short: In 2012, Santhosh Narayanan stepped away from engineering to debut with Attakathi. By bringing the raw, funeral-associated sounds of Gaana back to the mainstream, he didn't just launch a career; he fundamentally altered the sonic landscape of contemporary South Indian cinema.
Born in Tiruchimappalli, Santhosh Narayanan’s path to film composition was unconventional. After earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from J. J. College of Engineering and Technology, he worked as a recording engineer and programmer. His early musical ventures included performing with the contemporary folk band La Pongal in 2009 and contributing to A. R. Rahman’s soundtracks, such as Guru in 2007.
His breakthrough came with the 2012 film Attakathi, directed by Pa. Ranjith. Narayanan utilized the Gaana genre, specifically through tracks like "Aadi Pona Aavani," and introduced the then-unknown singer Gana Bala to the public. This move was credited with revitalizing Gaana within Tamil cinema. His subsequent work, including the soundtracks for Pizza and Uyir Mozhi, featured high-profile international collaborations, including recording at Studios 301 in Sydney, Australia, and utilizing the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Narayanan’s style is defined by genre fusion, ranging from the electronic and gangsta rap elements in Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda to the immersive, live instrumentation of Cuckoo. His versatility has allowed him to score massive projects like Kabali and Kalki 2898 AD, while also finding massive success in the independent space. His collaboration on the music video "Enjoy Enjami" achieved over 510 million views, marking a significant moment for independent Tamil music.
Beyond film, Narayanan has become a pivotal figure in the 'new-age musical trio' of Tamil cinema. His ability to blend folk, blues, and electronic sounds has made him a prominent figure in South Indian music, bridging the gap between traditional street genres and modern, globalized production.
