From Tbilisi to the Lakers: the meteoric rise of Sandro Mamukelashvili
In short: Born in New York but raised in Georgia, Sandro Mamukelashvili has navigated a complex international journey to reach the NBA. From overcoming wrist injuries at Seton Hall to breaking scoring records in limited minutes, his career is a testament to resilience and the influence of a basketball dynasty.
Sandro Mamukelashvili's path to professional basketball is deeply rooted in a family of athletes. He discovered basketball through his brother David, an English and philosophy instructor, whose grandmother, Ira Gabashvili, played for the Soviet women's national basketball squad. This foundation helped him navigate a nomadic upbringing that included moves from New York City to Tbilisi, Georgia, and eventually to Biella, Italy, at age 14.
His collegiate career at Seton Hall was marked by both injury and dominance. Despite a fractured right wrist in December 2019 that sidelined him for several weeks, he averaged 11.9 points and 6 rebounds per game during his junior season. During his final year, his performance improved remarkably; he averaged 7.6 rebounds, 17.5 points, and 3.2 assists, securing both the Haggerty Award and Big East co-Player of the Year honours.
In the NBA, Mamukelashvili has proven his ability to make an immediate impact. After being selected 54th overall in the 2021 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers and subsequently traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, he has continued to evolve. A standout moment occurred on March 19, 2025, while playing for the San Antonio Spurs, when he scored a career-high 34 points in just 19 minutes, setting a record for the most points scored in a game with less than 20 minutes of play.
His recent trajectory includes a significant contract with the Toronto Raptors and a subsequent four-year, $52 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2026. This progression from a second-round pick to a high-value NBA veteran highlights a career defined by constant adaptation and high-level performance.
