In short: Santhy Balachandran didn't just step onto a film set; she transitioned from the rigorous world of theatre to become a versatile face of Malayalam cinema. Her journey highlights a deliberate subversion of casting tropes, proving that 'urban' actors can inhabit deeply rooted local spaces.

Santhy Balachandran’s entry into the spotlight was forged in the theatre. Sanal Aman's production of The Lover by Harold Pinter featured her as the protagonist, earning her notable recognition within Kochi. This specific performance served as her professional catalyst; it was through this work that director Dominic Arun approached her to make her feature film debut in the 2017 comedy thriller Tharangam.

Her career is marked by a conscious effort to challenge industry perceptions regarding her 'urban' background. In Lijo Jose Pellissery’s 2018 film Jallikkattu, she played Sophie, a character she noted was intentionally unlike herself. She had to actively push back against the notion that her persona prevented her from being cast in roles rooted in local spaces, ultimately portraying a woman with her own agenda who refused to be a pushover.

Balachandran’s range extends from psychological complexity to physical impulsivity. In Tharangam, she portrayed Malini, a 'bossy and serious' guest lecturer with an interesting psychological disorder—a performance that earned critical acclaim for its nuance. Conversely, in the 2020 film Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte, she navigated the challenge of portraying Linda, a character whose actions were considered abnormal by others but natural to her, requiring a balance of impulsivity without becoming over-the-top.

Beyond the screen, Balachandran brings an academic and artistic depth to her craft. Having completed a postgraduate qualification in visual anthropology at Oxford University, she also works as an artist with six solo shows held in different locations.
