From the pitch to the dugout: the versatile career of Santiago Solari
In short: A dynamic left-footed winger who graced the heights of Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Santiago Solari transitioned from a decorated playing career to the high-pressure world of football management. Discover the journey of the man nicknamed 'Indiecito' through Europe's most prestigious clubs.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, on 7 October 1976, Solari’s footballing lineage is profound. The son of Eduardo and nephew of Jorge, he was part of a sporting family that included brothers Esteban and David. His professional journey began in 1996 at River Plate, following a formative period in the United States at Richard Stockton College in New Jersey.
As a player, Solari was a versatile winger known for his technical dribbling and long-range striking ability. His career saw him navigate the intense rivalries of La Liga, moving from Atlético Madrid to Real Madrid after a 600 million pesetas buyout. A defining moment of his playing days occurred during the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League final, where he played the full 90 minutes and was involved in the buildup to Zinedine Zidane’s iconic volley.
Solari's later playing years included a €6 million move to Inter Milan in 2005, where he secured three consecutive Serie A titles. After a nomadic period playing for clubs like San Lorenzo, Atlante, and Peñarol, he retired in 2010. He then pivoted to coaching, notably serving as the caretaker manager for Real Madrid in late 2018, a tenure marked by winning the FIFA Club World Cup.
His managerial path has been marked by both significant achievements and sudden departures. In Mexico, he led Club América to a second-place finish and a CONCACAF Champions League final in 2021, matching a win rate previously held by Leo Beenhakker. However, his time at América ended in March 2022 following a difficult run of results in the Grita México Clausura.
