In short: What happens when a secret hobby becomes a bridge to connection? Sasaki and Miyano explores the quiet, internal journey of two high school boys navigating self-discovery. It moves beyond tropes to examine how mutual respect and communication shape the transition from friendship to romance.

Created by Shō Harusono, Sasaki and Miyano began its serialization on the pixiv Comic website in 2016. The narrative follows Miyano Yoshikazu, a first-year student who secretly enjoys boys' love (BL) manga, and Sasaki Shumei, a second-year student with a reputation as a delinquent. Their relationship begins after a chance encounter at school, where Sasaki’s curiosity about Miyano’s interests leads to a shared hobby and a deepening friendship. Miyano often felt insecure about his androgynous appearance during his middle school years. He eventually outgrew these feelings upon entering high school. Sasaki is a tall student who is known for being quite expressive with his emotions. He eventually becomes Miyano's boyfriend.

The series is distinguished by its 'slow-burn' approach to romance. While Sasaki is the first to recognize and express his romantic feelings, Miyano undergoes a significant internal journey. Miyano ponders his personal identity and the nature of his feelings for Sasaki, wondering if his devotion transcends friendship due to his history with BL fiction and their actual bond. The story emphasizes character-driven exploration, prioritizing communication and consent over rapid plot progression. Miyano is a self-identified fudanshi who watches for specific genre tropes in his daily life. He feels embarrassed by his hobby and keeps it hidden from most classmates. The narrative focuses on everyday school life and quiet moments of introspection. Supporting characters also provide different perspectives on the social environment.

The work has achieved significant reach, spanning eleven tankōbon volumes, a three-volume novel adaptation by Kotoko Hachijō, and a television anime series produced by Studio Deen in 2022. Censorship has affected the work, even though it gained acclaim and secured a victory in Pixiv Comic's 10th Anniversary Special Edition Web Manga Election during May 2023. In August 2024, it was banned in Florida's Brevard Public Schools district for its depiction of a male romantic relationship and its right-to-left reading format. During February 2023, the Japanese debut of the animated movie Sasaki and Miyano: Graduation occurred. A spin-off manga titled Hirano and Kagiura began serialization in March 2019. Kadokawa published a complete guide and an official comic anthology for the series. The manga is licensed for distribution in North America by Yen Press.
