In short: Born Rangaraj Subbiah, this prolific actor defied his mother's wishes to enter cinema. After decades of playing menacing antagonists and supporting roles to superstars like Rajinikanth, he achieved a massive career resurgence at age 60, becoming a household name across India through a single iconic folklore role.

Sathyaraj's journey began in 1976 when he left Coimbatore for Chennai's Kodambakkam film industry, despite his mother's opposition. His early career was defined by antagonistic roles; between 1978 and 1985, he appeared in approximately 75 films, often playing henchmen to established villains like M. N. Nambiar. His first credited role was in 1978's Sattam En Kaiyil, where he served as a henchman to Thengai Srinivasan. He entered the industry after watching a film shoot and meeting actor Sivakumar. To support his early ambitions, producer Maathampatty Sivakumar provided him with monthly funds.

A significant shift occurred in 1985 when he debuted as a protagonist in the crime thriller Saavi. This marked the beginning of a period of box office success as a lead hero, including hits like Kadalora Kavithaigal and Manthira Punnagai. His versatility was further proven in the 1990s, notably in the film Amaidhipadai, where he played a dual role as father and son—a performance he credits with taking his acting to a new level. His breakthrough came through a supporting role in the 1984 film Nooravathu Naal. He also achieved significant success in the 1987 film Vedham Pudhithu.

Despite facing criticism around 2000 regarding his longevity as a solo lead, Sathyaraj successfully reinvented himself. He transitioned into matured supporting roles, earning widespread acclaim for his performance in Nanban. His career reached a new peak of nationwide popularity in 2015 when he played Kattappa in the massive folklore epic Baahubali, fulfilling a long-held dream of appearing in a folklore film. He earned several awards for his performance in the film Nanban. His role as Kattappa brought him immense fame across the entire country.
