From iconic Bollywood comedian to versatile director and producer
In short: Few performers master the transition from comedic sidekick to cinematic auteur. Satish Kaushik, celebrated for his unforgettable role in Mr. India, navigated a complex career spanning theatre, screenwriting, and directing, leaving behind a diverse legacy in Indian cinema.
Born in Delhi in 1956, Satish Kaushik’s journey began in the rigorous training grounds of the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India. While he gained widespread recognition for playing the character 'Calendar' in the classic Mr. India, his talent extended far beyond comedic supporting roles. He was a decorated performer, earning the Filmfare Best Comedian Award twice: first in 1990 for Ram Lakhan and again in 1997 for Saajan Chale Sasural.
Kaushik's versatility was evident in his work across different mediums. In theatre, he tackled heavy dramatic roles, such as Willy Loman in the Hindi adaptation Salesman Ramlal. As a writer, he contributed dialogues to the 1983 comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. However, his transition into directing faced significant hurdles. His early directorial efforts, including Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in 1993 and Prem in 1995, were box office disasters, though he eventually found success with the 1999 hit Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain.
Beyond the screen, Kaushik was an entrepreneur and a visionary for regional cinema. Alongside classmate Anupam Kher, he co-founded Karol Bagh Productions in 2007. His ambitions also reached into infrastructure, as a partner in the Chandigarh film city project involving a 30-acre plot in Sarangpur Village. Despite his professional triumphs, his personal life was marked by profound loss, including the death of his son, Shanu, in 1996. He passed away in Gurugram on 9 March 2023, aged 66.
