In short: A professional football club can be born from the ashes of a defunct team, travel across the country, and undergo a total identity shift. Sporting Club Delhi’s journey from a struggling Hyderabad startup to a rebranded capital city mainstay is a masterclass in sports logistics and rebranding.

The club's origins are rooted in a 2019 rescue mission. Following the financial collapse of FC Pune City, which had failed to pay players and attempted a merger with Mumbai City, the ownership rights were purchased by Varun Tripuraneni and Vijay Madduri. They launched the club as Hyderabad FC on August 27, 2019, effectively replacing the disbanded Pune side for the 2019–20 Indian Super League (ISL) season. The club's first kits and branding were unveiled just before the 2019–20 season began. They also signed nearly every player from the final Pune City squad to build their roster. This transition was finalized after reports of the Pune side's disbandment surfaced in late August 2019.

The team initially struggled, losing their first match 0–5 and finishing their inaugural season in 10th place. However, they found success in the 2021–22 season, winning their first and only ISL title by defeating Kerala Blasters 3–1 on penalties. Despite this success, local support in Hyderabad began to wane; attendance dropped from over 14,000 at their first home match to an average of 7,195 by the 2023–24 season. During their first season, the team suffered a 0–5 loss to ATK in their debut match. They also experienced a 12-match unbeaten run during their second competitive year. In the 2021–22 final, goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani saved four penalties during the shootout.

A major shift occurred on September 2, 2024, when the Delhi-based B.C. Jindal Group acquired the sporting license. To reduce logistical challenges and tap into a new market, the club announced a relocation to New Delhi in October 2025. This move prompted a complete rebranding to Sporting Club Delhi. The new identity features a stylized Phoenix logo, symbolizing the club's return to the capital city, which once held a thriving football culture but lacked a top-tier professional team. The new identity was officially launched on October 18, 2025. The club is currently exploring the possibility of sharing Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with Punjab FC. They also aim to eventually establish Ambedkar Stadium as their permanent home ground.
