The youngest face to ever grace Inter Milan's European stage
In short: At just 16 years old, Sebastiano Esposito broke records by debuting for Inter Milan in a European competition. His rapid ascent from a teenage prodigy to a national team regular highlights the intense pressure and unique trajectory of modern football's elite talents.
Esposito's rise began in 2019, a landmark year for his early career. On March 14, he entered the pitch as a substitute for Borja Valero against Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming the youngest player to ever represent Inter Milan in a European competition. By October of that same year, he continued his rapid progression by debuting in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund, making him the first player born in 2002 to feature in the tournament for the club.
His development was characterized by a nomadic loan system designed to provide varied experience. Between 2020 and 2024, he moved through various tiers of Italian and European football, including spells at SPAL, Venezia, and the Swiss club Basel. At Basel, he played 39 games and scored nine goals, while his time at Empoli in 2024 saw him reach a personal peak by scoring 8 goals in a single season despite the club's eventual relegation.
The ultimate validation of his talent arrived on the international stage. In September 2026, Esposito made his debut for the Italy national team in a Nations League match against Turkey. This appearance was historically significant as he started alongside his brother, Pio Esposito. This marked the first time in over a century—since 1915—that two brothers started together for the Italian national team, cementing the Esposito name in football history.
Currently, Esposito continues to navigate the complexities of professional transfers. Following a move to Cagliari in 2025, he joined Sassuolo on loan in 2026. His journey reflects the modern 'loan army' model, where high-potential talents are circulated across different leagues and clubs to refine their skills before establishing a permanent home in the top flight.
