Can an artist's spirit continue to perform after they die?
In short: In the 2018 Tamil film Seethakaathi, a veteran theater actor who refused to appear on screen continues his craft from beyond the grave. This supernatural premise explores whether art is a physical act or a spiritual essence that can inhabit another body.
The narrative centers on Ayya Aadhimoolam, a veteran theater actor whose devotion to live performance led him to refuse film roles. Following his death during a play, his assistant Parasuraman notices two actors performing with uncanny skill. Specifically, a newcomer named Saravanan begins performing beyond his capabilities, even bowing to an audience when the curtains are closed—a behavior that leads Parasuraman to believe Ayya's spirit is acting through him. The production of this story began in April 2017 after a prior delay to finish another project. It features Vijay Sethupathi in his twenty-fifth lead role. The film was released on December 20, 2018.
This premise creates a unique cinematic conflict: as Saravanan becomes a superstar, it is revealed that Ayya only agreed to inhabit the body because he liked the film's story. The supernatural bond is eventually broken when a producer named Dhanapal attempts to force action and song sequences into the project, violating the artistic integrity of the performance. This leads to a legal battle where a judge must determine if the 'acting' was fraud or a genuine metaphysical phenomenon. Dhanapal's deceptive tactics caused Ayya to stop performing permanently. A court case followed where the Producers' Council accused the troupe of being frauds. The family eventually obtained footage of the production as evidence for the legal proceedings.
The film serves as a philosophical exploration of death—physical, emotional, and professional. It posits that while an artist may pass away, their dedication to their craft remains. The story concludes with a judicial observation that a man cannot be separated from his art; even if Ayya is no longer physically present, he exists wherever his art resides. Critics noted that the movie balances philosophical drama with absurdist comedy. It received a special prize at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. A wax statue was also unveiled in Chennai to promote the character.
