The Red Giants: A century of Malaysian football's most decorated dynasty
In short: From a 1921 debut to a 2020 privatization, Selangor Football Club has defined Malaysian football. With 61 total trophies and a record 33 Malaysia Cup titles, the club's history is a saga of legendary players, stadium shifts, and unmatched domestic dominance.
The roots of Selangor's footballing identity trace back to 1906, when the Selangor Association Football League (SAFL) was established by five local institutions, including the Royal Selangor Club. While the club officially entered national competition in August 1921 against Penang, its modern organizational structure was forged through a decade-long dispute. In 1926, a faction split to form the Selangor Football Association (SFA), but the two entities eventually merged on 22 February 1936 to create the Football Association of Selangor (FAS).
Selangor's trophy cabinet is unparalleled in the Malaysian game, boasting 52 top-qualifying honours and 61 trophies in total. This includes a record 33 Malaysia Cup titles and 8 Malaysia Charity Shields. The club achieved a historic milestone in 1984 by becoming the first Malaysian side to secure a league and cup double. Their influence across the continent was just as profound; by reaching the final of the 1967 Asian Champion Club Tournament, they made history as Malaysia's first participating side.
The club's physical home has evolved alongside its prestige. After playing at the MAHA Stadium—which was destroyed following damage during the Japanese occupation (1941–1945)—the club moved to the massive Shah Alam Stadium in 1994. This venue, built for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, featured the world's longest free gate at the time. Today, as the club operates under a privatized model as Selangor Football Club, they continue to produce icons like Mokhtar Dahargi while maintaining fierce rivalries with Kuala Lumpur City and Singapore.
