Seong Gi-hun: How a fictional gambler became a symbol of systemic societal failure
In short: Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk and brought to life by actor Lee Jung-jae, Seong Gi-hun is the protagonist of the dystopian series Squid Game. More than just a survivor of a lethal contest, Gi-hun serves as a mirror for real-world economic struggles, embodying the desperate, often contradictory nature of human survival.
Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, was designed by creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to reflect his own life experiences, including his neighborhood, his struggles with gambling, and his personal failures. The character's background as a former factory worker who opposed mass layoffs was specifically inspired by the 2009 SsangYong Motor labor strike. Hwang cast Lee Jung-jae in the role to subvert the actor's reputation for playing 'cool' characters, aiming instead to reveal the raw humanity and vulnerability behind the role. Lee, who initially hesitated due to the character's status as a 'loser,' eventually found the role to be his most heartbreaking performance.
Critics have frequently analyzed Gi-hun through the lens of South Korea's 1997 Asian financial crisis. Scholars and journalists argue that his descent into debt and his reliance on predatory loans highlight the limitations of the 'bootstrapping myth,' where hard work often fails to yield stability. His journey is characterized by a constant tension between his inherent goodness and the selfish, desperate choices forced upon him by the game's brutal environment. In later seasons, Gi-hun’s evolution into a Don Quixote-like figure—recklessly challenging the system—has drawn both praise for its darker intensity and criticism for its perceived lack of logic.
The character's development is marked by profound trauma and a shifting moral compass. While his victory in the first season left him paralyzed by guilt, his subsequent return to the games was driven by a desire to dismantle the organization from within. His eventual sacrifice—jumping off a platform to save a child—served as a final rejection of the cynical philosophy maintained by the game's architects. This act of defiance, occurring in May 2025, ultimately led to the destruction of the island's facilities, cementing his legacy as a man who chose to reclaim his humanity over the survival of the fittest.
