A man-made virus and the rise of the vampires
In short: In a world devastated by a human-made plague, only children under thirteen remain untouched. As the global population falls, vampires emerge from the earth to claim what is left. This is the dark, high-stakes premise of the acclaimed manga series Seraph of the End.
Written by Takaya Kaglam and illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto, Seraph of the End (also known as Vampire Reign) began its serialization in Shueisha's Jump Square in September 2012. The story is set against a backdrop of global catastrophe, where a man-made virus has ravaged the human population, leaving only those under the age of thirteen alive. In the wake of this biological collapse, vampires emerge from the earth's recesses, followed by other supernatural entities previously thought to be mere myths.
The narrative follows Yuichiro Hyakuya, a young man who joins the Moon Demon Company—a vampire extermination unit of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army—to avenge his fallen family. His mission is deeply personal, driven by the desire to reclaim his childhood friend, Mikaela Hyakuya. The tragedy of their separation is rooted in a failed escape attempt at the Hyakuya Orphanage when the pair were twelve years old. During this attempt, Mikaela secretly traded blood to the Seventh Progenitor, Ferid Bathory, for a weapon and a map, leading to a massacre that left nearly everyone dead.
The series has expanded significantly beyond its original manga, including an anime adaptation by Wit Studio that aired in two parts throughout 2015. The franchise also encompasses light novels, such as the prequel focusing on Guren Ichinose, and various spin-offs. The commercial success of the series is notable; by October 2022, the manga had reached over 15 million copies in circulation. As the story approaches its conclusion with the 37th volume, the saga of survival and vengeance continues to captivate a global audience.
