From classical roots to Bollywood charts: the rise of Shalmali Kholgade
In short: Before she became a household name in Bollywood playback singing, Shalmali Kholgade was a student of Indian classical music. Her journey from a child prodigy under her mother's tutelage to a multi-lingual hitmaker reveals the rigorous discipline behind India's modern pop soundscape.
Shalmali Kholgade's musical foundation was laid at the age of 8. She received formal training in music from her mother, Uma Kholgade, a notable Indian classical singer and theatre personality. This classical pedigree provided the technical basis for her diverse career, which eventually spanned several Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil.
She first gained experience by singing with Ali Zafar as a backing vocalist and also featured as a soloist for a cabaret group from Latvia called Bombaloo. She eventually transitioned into a prominent playback singer in 2012. Her debut as a lead vocalist was the song "Pareshaan" from the film Ishaqzaade, composed by Amit Trivedi. The track was a significant commercial and critical success, leading to her winning a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
Kholgade's rise was marked by a prolific output of hits between 2012 and 2015. She contributed to major soundtracks like Cocktail, Aiyyaa, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the latter of which earned her a second Filmfare nomination. Beyond Bollywood, she established a significant regional presence, recording successful tracks for Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, and Marathi cinema. This versatility allowed her to bridge the gap between mainstream pop and regional cultural identities.
In recent years, Kholgade has expanded her influence into composition and television. She made her debut as a music composer for the Marathi film June in 2020 and has served as a judge for reality shows like Indian Idol Junior and Sur Nava Dhyas Nava. Her career illustrates a successful evolution from a classically trained student to a multi-faceted composer and industry judge.
