The linebacker who chose a butcher knife over chronic pain
In short: At age four, Shaquem Griffin faced a choice: endure the agonizing pain of a developmental deformity or take drastic action. His decision led to a life-altering amputation that would eventually pave the way for a historic journey into the NFL as a one-handed athlete.
Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1995, Shaquem Griffin was born with amniotic band syndrome. This condition prevented the full development of his left hand, causing him to experience such intense, unbearable pain that at just four years old, he grabbed a butcher knife with the intent to cut the hand off himself. His mother intervened, and his parents scheduled an amputation the following day. Despite the loss of his hand, Griffin continued to excel in sports, competing in track, baseball, and football alongside his twin brother, Shaquill.
Griffin's path to professional football was marked by significant adversity. During his college career at the University of Central Florida (UCF), he faced a difficult environment under former coach George O'Leary, whom Griffin described as 'bullying and belittling' him and making threats. After Scott Frost took over in 2016, Griffin's performance improved, leading to his 2016 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award and a flawless national championship run for UCF.
His entry into the NFL was a media sensation. At the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine, he performed 20 reps on the bench press while wearing a prosthesis and clocked a 40-yard dash of 4.38 seconds—the fastest time for a linebacker in the league's official statistics. During the 2018 draft, the Seattle Seahawks chose him in the fifth round. Over four seasons, including a notable sack of Aaron Rodgers in 2019, Griffin proved his capability before retiring in 2022 to join the NFL Legends Community as a mentor.
