The only man to conquer Asia as both player and manager
In short: Shin Tae-yong didn't just lead teams; he mastered them across different eras and nations. From his days as a creative playmaker in Korea to becoming the architect of Indonesia’s modern football rise, his career is defined by a rare ability to bridge the gap between on-field artistry and tactical mastery.
Shin Tae-yong's legacy is anchored by a unique historical feat: he is the first person to win the AFC Champions League as both a player (1995) and a manager (2010). As a player for Ilhwa Chunma, he was known as the "Fox of the Ground," an attacking midfielder celebrated for his intelligent dribbling and passing. His individual brilliance earned him two K League MVP awards and a spot in the league's 30th Anniversary Best XI.
His transition to management saw him navigate complex organizational shifts. After serving as a technical assistant, he took the helm of Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in 2009. He clinched both the 2011 Korean FA Cup and the 2010 AFC Champions League, even while facing acute financial deficits. His influence extended to the national level; while technically an assistant under Uli Stielike in 2014, Shin was widely recognized as the primary architect of tactics and training that led South Korea to their first Asian Cup final in 27 years.
Shin's most ambitious project began in late 2019 with the Indonesian national team. He became the first South Korean manager in their history, tasked with a massive cultural and athletic overhaul. He successfully qualified three different age levels (senior, U-23, and U-20) for the AFC Asian Cup. However, his tenure ended in a mix of high drama and controversy, including a 2025 dismissal by PSSI to favor a European manager and a brief, tumultuous stint at Ulsan HD that ended in a one-year suspension following allegations of physical misconduct toward a player.
