In short: From the Flathead Indian Reservation to the Dallas Cowboys, Shiyazh Pete’s journey is more than a sports story. His ascent through college football marks a landmark feat for Indigenous players, as he is the initial Navajo Nation representative to join an NFL squad.

Born in May 2003 in Montana, Shiyazh Pete’s path to professional football was marked by significant transitions. Having spent time in Arizona, New Mexico, and Missoula, Pete juggled various sports—notably securing 2011 Big Sky State Games judo gold—alongside his dedication to football. His high school years at Shiprock High School in New Mexico saw him emerge as a standout on both the offensive and defensive lines, earning first-team all-district honors on offense.

Pete’s collegiate career was defined by resilience and high-level performance. After joining New Mexico State University as a walk-on in 2021, he became a cornerstone of the Aggies' offensive line. During the 2023 season, he started all 15 games, helping the team secure a 10–5 record and a notable upset victory over Auburn. He achieved first-team All-Conference USA recognition even though a dislocated thumb required him to play in a cast. Following the departure of his coach, Pete transferred to the Kentucky Wildcats, where he became a starting left tackle and a team captain.

Despite being unselected in the 2026 NFL draft, Pete’s talent was recognized by scouts, with analysts from ESPN and The Athletic ranking him among the top offensive tackle prospects. He successfully signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, a milestone celebrated by Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren. While his preseason tenure with the Cowboys ended in August 2026, Pete remains a high-profile figure for Native American athletes, embodying a deep connection to his Navajo and Salish heritage through his academic and athletic pursuits.
