From Mumbai hotel executive to a star of Indian television and film
In short: Prior to becoming a famous figure in Indian media, Shruti Seth held a position as a guest relation executive at Bombay's Taj Mahal Hotel. Her journey from hospitality to the screen involved hosting hit shows on Channel V and starring in major productions like Slumdog Millionaire.
Born in 1977 and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shruti Seth’s career began with a mix of hospitality and modeling to earn pocket money. After graduating from St. Xavier's College with a degree in economics and commerce, she found her footing as a video jockey and television host for Channel V, a role she credits with putting her on the map. She initially started modelling to supplement her income. This early work occurred alongside her time working at the Taj Mahal Hotel.
A major career milestone arrived with the Star Plus comedy series Shararat, which ran from 2003 to 2006. Playing the character Kiya, Seth gained significant recognition and critical acclaim. This success paved the way for film roles in high-profile productions, including the 2006 film Fanaa—which became the sixth-highest grossing Hindi film of that year—and the 2008 global success Slumdog Millionaire. Her breakout performance was alongside co-stars Farida Jalal and Eva Grover. This sitcom was a surprising hit that aired for three years on the network.
Seth has navigated the complexities of the industry, once noting that television ratings (TRPs) can be skewed and may not reflect the preferences of a massive population. Her work has spanned various formats, from Disney Channel's The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir to streaming series like the 2020 production The Forgotten Army – Azaadi Ke Liye, where she portrayed Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan. Her versatility has seen her move from sitcoms to more intense roles, such as her appearance in the 2010 film Raajneeti. She also appeared in the series Baalveer, taking over the role of Rani Pari. Additionally, she has been featured in various recent streaming projects including Mentalhood and Bloody Brothers.
