His playing career took him through various levels of Finnish football, including the second-tier Ykkönen, before reaching the top-flight Veikkausliiga with FinnPa in 1995. His talents eventually led him to the international stage, earning 32 caps for the Finnish national team.
As a manager, Valakari has demonstrated a profound ability to rebuild clubs. His tenure at SJK saw the team rise from promotion in 2013 to winning the Finnish championship in 2015, alongside domestic cup successes in 2014 and 2016. However, his managerial path has not been without friction; he faced dismissal at SJK in 2017 following a disagreement with the club's chairman, and later left Tromsø in 2020 following their relegation.
Valakari’s impact in Scotland has been particularly transformative. He made history as the first non-domestic coach at St Johnstone after his October 2024 appointment, marking the club's 140th year. Despite initial work visa complications that prevented him from accessing the bench, he led the team through a period of transition. After the club suffered relegation at the end of the 2024–25 season, Valakari remained to guide them through a dominant start to the 2025–26 Scottish Championship campaign, securing both the title and promotion back to the Premiership.
His influence has extended even beyond the touchline. In January 2026, St Johnstone honored his leadership by launching 'Simo's Gold,' a club-branded lager named in his honor.
