From Haryana to global acclaim: the rising trajectory of Suvinder Vicky
In short: After decades of character work in Punjabi and Hindi cinema, Suvinder Vicky has emerged as a global streaming force. From his early debut in 1995 to his award-winning lead in the Netflix drama Kohrra, discover how this Haryana-born actor transitioned from supporting roles to international critical acclaim.
Born in 1973 in Sirsa, Haryana, Suvinder Vicky—also known as Savinderpal Vicky—began his professional journey in the mid-1990s. After making his screen debut in the 1995 film Full Tension, he spent years building a repertoire of supporting and character roles across both Punjabi cinema and Hindi-language productions. He holds a Master of Arts in Theatre and Television, earned at Patiala's Punjabi University. His parents, Harbans Lal Kamboj and Amarjit Kaur, raised him in the Haryana region. This academic foundation in theatre and television provided the technical groundwork for his later screen successes.
Although he appeared in films such as Kesari (2019), Udta Punjab (2016), and Des Hoyaa Pardes (2004), his streaming-era roles brought him significant critical acclaim. His performance as the truck driver Ghalib in Meel Patthar (2020) earned him significant industry recognition, including a Best Actor win at the 2020 Silver Screen Awards and a 2022 Critics' Choice Film Award for Best Actor in a Feature Film. His filmography also includes a role in the 2020 production Pataal Lok. These varied performances across different genres helped establish his reputation as a versatile talent in the industry.
The true turning point in his career arrived in 2023 with the Netflix crime drama Kohrra. Playing the policeman Balbir Singh, Vicky delivered a restrained portrayal of a man caught between personal and professional turmoil. This role not only brought him widespread critical acclaim and a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor but also introduced his talent to a global audience. Looking ahead, his upcoming projects, including Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Satluj, both slated for 2026, suggest his influence in the industry continues to expand. In the 2026 production Satluj, he is set to portray an officer named Sugga. This follows his casting as Brigadier Jahangir in the upcoming Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
