From high school defensive end to the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history
In short: Taylor Lewan’s ascent was defined by raw athleticism and massive contracts. After dominating the Big Ten, he reached the pinnacle of his position's earning potential, yet his career was ultimately shaped by a series of devastating physical setbacks and high-profile controversies.
Taylor Lewan's path to professional stardom began with a positional shift. Originally a defensive end at Chaparral High School in Arizona, the California-born athlete transitioned to the offensive line, eventually becoming a standout for the Michigan Wolverines. His collegiate career was marked by immense physical prowess; he was recognized as one of the most agile and athletic offensive linemen in the nation by Rivals.com. By 2013, he had secured his second consecutive Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year award.
The Tennessee Titans selected Lewan with the eleventh overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, providing him with a four-year, $11.48 million fully guaranteed contract. His peak financial moment arrived on July 27, 2018, when he signed a five-year, $80 million extension. With $50 million guaranteed, the deal made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the history of the league.
Despite his on-field success, including three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2016 to 2018, Lewan's career was punctuated by volatility. He faced a four-game suspension in 2019 after failing a drug test and dealt with significant disciplinary issues, including an ejection in 2016 for pushing a referee. His physical decline was driven by severe injuries; a torn ACL in 2020 and subsequent knee injuries in 2022 led to his release by the Titans in February 2023. Following his playing days, he transitioned to media, co-hosting the podcast 'Bussin' With The Boys' with former teammate Will Compton.
Off the field, Lewan's legacy remains complex. He has faced legal challenges, including misdemeanor charges in 2013 following an altercation in Ann Arbor, and a 2023 medical malpractice lawsuit regarding his ACL surgery. He also addressed past allegations regarding comments made during his college years, maintaining his innocence regarding threats of violence.
