In short: Russell Packer’s career is a study in extreme polarities. From a violent assault that led to a prison sentence and potential deportation, to becoming a co-captain for the Wests Tigers, his journey through professional rugby league highlights the complex path of rehabilitation and second chances.

Packer's rise was rapid. By age 16, he debuted in the Bartercard Cup, and by 2006, he was captaining the Junior Kiwis. He reached the pinnacle of his sport in 2011, starting as a prop for the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL Grand Final and making his international debut for the national team against Australia in the same year.

His career hit a devastating low in late 2013. After being caught on camera urinating in his shorts during a match—an incident that earned him a $15,000 fine—he committed a serious assault on a man, fracturing his eye socket and causing multiple facial fractures. He was sentenced to two years in jail in January 2014. His contract with the Newcastle Knights was terminated before he could play a single game.

The path back was arduous. After his non-parole period was reduced to one year and he was granted permission to remain in Australia, Packer spent 2015 in the second-tier New South Wales Cup. The St. George Illawarra Dragons assisted his rehabilitation until the NRL gave formal approval for his return. He eventually signed a two-year deal with them in late 2015.

Packer returned to international play in 2017 and joined the Wests Tigers in 2018, where he was named one of five co-captains. Despite facing further disciplinary issues regarding team protocols and a recurring foot injury that nearly forced a medical retirement, he played until his announced retirement in September 2021.
