In short: For years, The Amazing Race production team worked tirelessly to keep their filming a secret. But for season 25, they made a radical choice: they invited the public to watch the very first start in New York City's Times Square.

The decision to host a public start at Duffy Square was driven by production's recognition of social media ubiquity and escalating fan excitement. While it broke the traditional veil of secrecy, it allowed CBS to announce the identities of all eleven competing teams on the same day as filming began on May 31, 2014. Filming commenced in the early morning hours of May 31, 2014. This move allowed for immediate publicity across digital platforms.

This season introduced several high-stakes mechanics, including a 'Save'—an immunity pass awarded to first-place finishers in Leg 1 that protected them from elimination once before Leg 9. It was also the first time the show featured a 'Blind Detour,' where teams only discovered their chosen task after arriving at the location, and an Express Pass hidden along the course. The Save was presented once during a non-elimination leg but remained unused. Additionally, teams could use an Express Pass to skip one specific task.

The competition spanned four continents and ten countries, covering over 26,000 miles (42,000 km). It included first-time visits to Malta, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Scotland's Shetland Islands. The race concluded on December 19, 2014, with food scientists Amy DeJong and Maya Warren taking home the US$1,000,000 prize. The journey included stops in Singapore and the Philippines. The final destination was Greater Los Angeles.

A notable structural change occurred in the finale: for the first time in history, four teams competed in the final leg. However, host Phil Keoghan maintained the show's elimination tradition by removing one team mid-way through that final stretch, leaving only three racers to cross the finish line in Greater Los Angeles. Host Phil Keoghan appeared throughout the course to explain tasks to viewers. One team even received a trip to Sweden as a prize.
