In short: When Gautham Vasudev Menon released his 2012 Hindi romantic drama, Ekk Deewana Tha, he didn't just release one film. To cater to different audience preferences, he released several versions, including a conventional feel-good ending and a specific director's cut for select theaters.

Ekk Deewana Tha, which translates to "There was a crazy lover," is a 2012 Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. It serves as a remake of Menon's own 2010 bilingual films, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa in Tamil and Ye Maaya Chesave in Telugu. The production was notable for its complex release strategy; while the mainstream version was shown on 500 screens, a separate director's cut was released in 20 select theaters to showcase a coming-of-age narrative. The project was originally titled Prem Katha before the director opted for a more abstract name. Fox Star Studios, Photon Kathaas, and RS Infotainment were the primary production companies involved. Although the film received mixed reviews, it had a lukewarm reception at the box office. The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman and featured lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

The film's narrative follows Sachin Kulkarni, a mechanical engineering student in Mumbai aspiring to be a filmmaker, and Jessie, a woman from a conservative Malayali Syrian Catholic family in Alappuzha, Kerala. Their relationship faces significant tension due to religious differences and family disapproval. The storyline eventually culminates in a meta-cinematic climax where the characters' real-life reunion is revealed to be the plot of the film Sachin is making.

The production faced scrutiny from the Christian Secular Forum in Mumbai, which objected to the song "Hosanna," arguing the sacred term was used inappropriately in a romantic context. Composer A. R. Rahman defended the work, noting he had consulted Christian friends during the research phase. The film's soundtrack, featuring lyrics by Javed Akhtar, was released on 21 December 2011 at a luxury hotel in Agra.
